Thomas’ debut comedy special The Golden One, was produced by Bo Burnham, Chris Storer, and A24, and was released by HBO in February 2020 to rave reviews. The special follows Whitmer back to his hometown of Gulf Shores, Alabama to follow in the footsteps of his late mother and perform his show at the Flori-bama Lounge, and is a deeply personal story that incorporates original rock music, standup, and documentary-style footage of his interactions with his family, as he navigates life after his mother’s death, and explores how her death has impacted his relationships, his idea of legacy, and his own sense of self. Hardly Art Records released his album Songs from The Golden One in March 2020, which includes two original songs not within the comedy special.
